Zürich, 17th May 2002
My name is Nick Wilkinson and I am the 'organiser' of the Swiss Gnomes team of Rugby Club Zürich. I am writing to all the clubs of the Nordschweizer Rugby Vereine on the subject of Golden Oldies rugby. Golden Oldies rugby is basically the same game as rugby union with a few rule changes such as: you must be at least 35 years old; no kicking of the ball outside your own 22 metre line; tackling restrictions according to age etc. This makes the game safe for people of all ages (35 to 85) and the main aim is to promote friendship, rugby, fun and drinking…..
As you may – or may not – be aware, Rugby Club Zürich has had a Golden Oldies team, the Swiss Gnomes, since 1994, when they entered for the 2nd European Golden Oldies Championship in Heidelberg, Germany. Since then, the Swiss Gnomes have participated in many tournaments throughout Europe, most recently at the World Golden Oldies Festival in Toulouse last year. At the end of this month, the Swiss Gnomes are off to Split for the 6th European Championships, and in May next year, they are going to sunny Brisbane, Australia, for the World Golden Oldies. In between, there is a game against Baden-Würtemberg in September 2002.
The reason for writing to you is to invite any of your members who are 35+ years old to join with us for these games. There must be many 'oldies' in your clubs who would like an occasional friendly game, under Golden Oldies rules, but cannot find the time for – or just don't want to go – training. And then it's always the youngsters that get picked for all the teams, and so you just stop playing. Golden Oldies gives us all a chance to play on and enjoy our rugby for many more years to come. It would be great if some of your clubs could set up Golden Oldies teams so that we could establish regular – but not too regular – games amongst ourselves. Or you could join in with us until you have sufficient numbers to set up your own team. This is in no way an attempt to attract members away from your club; we just want to extend the rugby experience
I would be grateful if you could circulate this letter to all of your 35+ year old members, ex-members, supporters, etc. to see if there is any response. Anybody can contact me at any time for more information about any of these matters.
Many thanks for your help in this. Nick
